SXSW Part Deux: Starring Kim Thayil’s Murderous Girlfriend, Horny Australians and The Cynics!

March 22, 2011

So after the Bobby Elvis and Diego Luna incidents, Kim Thayil and his mean, mean girlfriend showed up tripping on acid and offered to set things on fire for my husband.  Wait, maybe I should back up a bit here.  First of all, Kim Thayil was the guitarist for Soundgarden.  By all accounts, he is a fine guitarist and a very nice man, but he looks like this:

Scary as shit, right?  So while The Mullens were rockin’ the house, this guy in the crowd (who looks exactly like that picture) is bouncing around with his girlfriend who keeps dancing in a very jerky manner and turning around at intervals to stare daggers through me.  Not in a “Hey, do I know you?” kind of way, but more in a “Remind me to totally stab that chick later” kind of way.  Oh shit, they are obviously tripping balls on acid and she has decided that I am the kryptonite to her purple haze experience.  Great.  After the guys played, Kim Thayil cornered my  husband and his guitarist and told them he wanted to play with them.  They thought he was a musician (and quite possibly Kim Thayil) so they humored him until they realized that he was totally tripping and what he wanted to do was set fireworks off onstage while they played.   Yeah, that guy in the picture.  Setting off fireworks in a club.  Uhh, raise your hand if this sounds like a really bad idea.

Thankfully, we managed to avoid Kim and Killer for the rest of the evening.  Next up were The Ugly Beats and they were impeccable as always.  I never get tired of that band.  Much fun was had by all, especially the Australian contingency who were dressed like extras from American Bandstand in 1966.  So adorable!  They were also smoking like fiends and practically having sex in front of us, but if they caught you looking, they would simply smile and wave at you.  That, my friends, is the difference between acid and ecstasy.

Finally, the last band was The Cynics.  I had never seen these guys but their influence on the punk/garage scene is legendary.  Often you hear things like that and when you finally see the band, meh.  You know?  Not the case here.  They were fantastic.  We danced and sang along and it was sweat soaked heaven until the management pulled the plug in mid-song.  Not nice, Easy Tiger.  Not kind.  But here’s a little Cynics for you!

Haha, no it was actually about someone who looks like Kim Thayil. I have never heard anything but nice things about Kim, and I am a fan as well.
